고독

웃어라, 온 세상이 너와 함께 웃을 것이다.
울어라, 너 혼자 울게 되리라.
낡고 슬픈 세상에서 즐거움은 빌려와야 하나,
고통은 이미 가진 것만으로도 충분하니까.
노래하라, 언덕들이 화답하리라
탄식하라, 허공에 흩어지리라
메아리는 즐거운 소리엔 장단을 맞추지만
근심의 소리는 외면할 것이다.

기뻐하라, 사람들이 널 찾을 테니,
슬퍼하라, 그들은 돌아서 떠나 가리라.
그들은 너와 기쁨을 나누길 원하나,
너의 근심은 필요로 하지 않으리
기뻐하라, 그러면 친구들이 많을 터이요
슬퍼하라, 그러면 그들을 다 잃으리라
누구나 달콤한 와인을 거절하지 않지만,
인생의 쓴 잔은 너 혼자 마시게 되리라.

연회를 베풀면 네 집은 사람들로 넘쳐 나지만,
네가 굶주리면, 세상은 너를 외면할 것이라.
성공하여 베풀면, 너의 삶에 도움이 되지만,
어느 누구도 너의 죽음을 도와주지 못하리라.
쾌락의 연회실에는 많은 사람을 위한
넓고 품위 있는 행렬의 공간이 있으나,
좁은 고통의 통로를 지날 때는
우리 모두는 한 줄로 줄지어 통과해야만 하네.
 
 
 

Solitude

Laugh, and the world laughs with you;

Weep, and you weep alone;

For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,

But has trouble enough of its own.

Sing, and the hills will answer;

Sigh, it is lost on the air;

The echoes bound to a joyful sound,

But shrink from voicing care.

Rejoice, and men will seek you;

Grieve, and they turn and go;

They want full measure of all your pleasure,

But they do not need your woe.

Be glad, and your friends are many;

Be sad, and you lose them all, -

There are none to decline your nectared wine,

But alone you must drink life’s gall.

​

Feast, and your halls are crowded;

Fast, and the world goes by.

Succeed and give, and it helps you live,

But no man can help you die.

There is room in the halls of pleasure

For a large and lordly train,

But one by one we must all file on

Through the narrow aisles of pain.
